Day 12, June 2, 2008
Wow, we got to sleep this morning until 7:30am. Fuel dock opened in Bella Bella at 8am and grocery store opened at 9. We all had a wonderful nights sleep. I think John and I went to sleep before sunset again as did Don and Diane. We are laughing as we all never go to sleep this early but the salt air and sunshine makes us ready for a good nights rest.
The forecast of gale force winds made our decision to spend the night in Shearwater, only 2 miles from Bella Bella. So after pulling lines in Bella Bella and tying up to the dock in Shearwater only 15 minutes later we were able to relax for a much needed day of rest and to look around Shearwater. We went to the hardware store and had our propane tanks filled and just a relaxing type of day. We are enjoying soup and sandwich and watching the weather in preparation for our departure tomorrow.
John says: “Much excitement this morning in Bella Bella, a small boat pulls in and a couple guys get off, one helping the other, “which way to the hospital” they call. The lady gives them instructions and they hobble off helping each other. One says he thinks he stove in a rib. The rest of the story we find out at Shearwater, where a large fishing vessel is waiting to be hauled out, after striking a rock in Reid Passage at speed, 2am in the morning. The rumor is the, the crew person, unknown, fell asleep on watch, leaving the boat on autopilot.
Don and John walked over to inspect the damage after the boat was hauled out. The wooden hull has severe damage and will require several weeks, at least, to fix.
Now guess what passage we are suppose to go up through tomorrow.
Yes, Reid Passage……………..
We have no auto pilot, however, only Don and John… with a brand new detailed chart John just purchased **smile**
