Anita Bay, Alaska

Day 22 June 12, 2008

The rain that had been forecasted arrived during the night and we woke to the soft sound of raindrops on the hatch canvas. Once awake, we found it was a drizzly rain with a light mist in the air. The kind that when you go outside you are immediately drenched but you never felt any actual rain!

Code Blue left around 7:30am to slowly explore & meander north toward Wangell and John, Don, Diane and Daleen decided to chat and have breakfast of hot scones and peaches and we left around 10:00am.

We traveled around Deer Island through the zigzag Zimovia Strait “The Narrows”. You had to really watch the red and green channel markers but it was a beautiful run with the light mist in the air and the small islands.

Due to our late start and the need for shorter days, Omega and Saoirse decided to overnight in Anita Bay. It is a gorgeous large bay with grassy shoals around the head of the bay. We anchored near a small waterfall with a stream of water running into the bay. No bears have been sighted but looks like a perfect place for some to feed.

The majestic bald eagles are still everywhere and we saw one fly and land in a nearby tree. I was telling John yesterday that I saw very few seagulls in Ketchikan and other areas we have traveled and where you might normally see seagulls in the marinas, we would see bald eagles. We have seen more eagles on top of mast, docks and trees than ever before. This one time we saw over 20 bald eagles trying to get to the fish at the cannery. Amazing… When Diane and I had returned from our look around the town, John was sitting in the cockpit of the Omega and snapping picture after picture. He whispered “ there ia an eagle on top of our neighbor’s mast” Oh my goodness. We are truly blessed to be able to see such beauty both in wildlife and scenery and there is so much more to come with the Glaciers and icebergs (hopefully more bergy bits than icebergs).

We are amazed we have only seen 2 humpbacks. Not sure why, since we saw so many last year. We are wondering if it is because we are a month earlier. We are hoping for more whale sightings.

Let me tell you, we knew it was a long way to Alaska but boy there a lot of water to cross…..**smile**
