August 12, 2008 Day 82
Upon arrival to Hartley, it was nice to have the dry weather. It had been raining for the past 2 days nonstop. We felt so sorry for the campers we met in Nettle Basin as it was raining pretty hard and also raining when we took pictures along Grenville Channel. We fueled up Omega and took on water. The marina is a govt' dock and they take donations for the electric used only.
The afternoon turned out overcast but dry. John and Daleen enjoyed watching the DVD that John gave her for her birthday of whales and auroras and just relaxing. A man stopped by our boat to announce the canoes were coming in and then we heard an announcement asking people to make dishes for dinner for the campers. Well, we will have to watch the DVD another time…
It turned out it was going to be 1 hour before the group arrived, so Daleen started making a batch of cookies for the campers while John took a walk around town and took some pictures of the area. You could hear th
e canoes arrive since there was beautiful chanting as they entered the bay, 4 canoes side by side slowly moving toward the shore. Luckily, John had the cameras ready and headed out to capture what we normally don’t see every day. Then the Chief, on the canoe, ask the Chief on the land for permission (in native language and song and then in English) to stay in Hartley Bay and have shelter and food for his people. It was very moving as the Chief at Hartley Bay welcomed them and gave them permission to stay as long as they needed. They concluded the small ceremony with a beautiful song. The town of Hartley had a dinner for them tonight and then a celebration type dinner tomorrow night.
John delivered the cookies and a DVD of the pictures we took of their paddling down Grenville Channel and of their entrance to Hartley Bay to a group of 4 Chiefs. They were very appreciative and said thank you and gave us a blessing for the remainder of our journey.
