Day 56 - 60 July 16 - 19, 2008
Our first Grizzly brown bear alert!!! at Yellow Point in Peril Strait, spotted by Don and Diane aboard Saoirse, just around the corner from Annie’s Pocket, where we spent the night and John spent time tending to a stern line on shore, was an awesome experience. It was the first time we have ever seen a Grizzly bear in the wild.
Sergius Narrows was uneventful since we passed during high slack. We continued the 27 miles into Sitka under cloudy but dry skies.

water. We motored over to the fuel dock, found out about moorage in Sitka and enjoyed our first evening.
Then the rains that we have heard about during
our trip started. We have been so lucky with weather, having either dry with blue or cloudy skies and now we know what people have experienced in the past. It started raining two days ago and has not stopped and the forecast is rain rain and more rain. We put on our rain gear and off we go. Catch the city bus and head into town and visit the museums and stores. Lots of history in Sitka.. We 
are glad to be safely tied to the dock to wait out some of the heavier rain.
John and Don changed the oil in our boats and John replaced the oil pressure gauge that had quit working a week or so ago. The furnace that John had rebuilt is nice to have on these cold and we

Our cell phones are not working in the marina and only off and on in the town area. We have Verizon and have had such great signals and in the lower 48 and British Columbia. However, in Alaska, we are lucky to get any signal at all. I have talked with Verizon and they agree. Our tours books state that there is suppose to be new Verizon towers in Ketchikan but Verizon kind of laughed and said, don’t hold your breath. It takes a very long time to get new towers installed compared to the way it used to be years ago.

My phone quit working in Ketchikan and started working again in Juneau but has quit working again. So don’t worry if you don’t hear from us. We are out of cell phone coverage areas.
We did find out that internet can be accessed at McDonald’s fastfood or in town at the Highliner coffee shop. With the rain, we have not been carrying the laptop around with us, thus the reason for the delayed blog.
Hope you are enjoying your summer and the weather is a little dryer than it is here but we are not complaining. We have had the best time with wonderful weather and beautiful views of mountains, whales, glaciers and we are not going to let a LOT of rain stop us from our next adventure!!!
We plan on leaving Sitka tomorrow. There was a storm front move through yesterday with rains for the past 2 days so we decided Sunday July 20th was a better day to leave. High winds 35-40 knots were forecast outside Sitka and a boat off shore reported 50knots yesterday. Leaving Sunday is a good day to allow the seas to calm down, catch up on the blog, tidy up the boats for our departure tomorrow. I continue to have no cell phone coverage which is very frustrating... The sun finally appeared this afternoon and it feels wonderful.
