Kake - WOW high fuel prices

Day 64 July 24th continued

We arrived at Kake around 5:30pm and filled with water and fuel. To our shock, the diesel was $6.48 per gallon. Wow!!! The most we have had to pay.

FYI –during our trip this summer, the fuel cost per gallon had ranged from $4.38 to 5.65. Our average was $4.45, but the Kake fuel price has brought our average to $5.60 per gallon for diesel. Luckily the Omega burns only right at .75 gallon per hour at about 6 ½ knots. As of today, we have traveled 1885 miles since leaving our homeport May 22.

The moorage at marinas in the San Juans Islands near our homeport of Anacortes, Wa. is around $1.00 - $1.25 per foot depending on where you are staying during the summer. In the Broughtons, B.C., where we will be going after we leave Alaska and where we have spent the last 3 summers is about the same but sometimes, I think around 65 cents - $1.00 per foot. Omega is 33 feet long.
Here in Alaska, the marinas charge has been between .35 - .55 per foot so that has been a pleasant surprise to help offset the fuel prices. We anchorage whenever we can and that is of course Free!!

There, you know as much as we do, except how are your fuel prices in your hometown??? We know you have sun, we have heard of temp in the 90’s and even 100’s and we are amazed since our temp are in the 50-60’s, we are heading south to try to find the golden ball in the sky. We have talked with friends along the way and they are already SOUTH and they too have sunshine!!

After fueling, we went to Portage Bay public docks south of the Kake Fuel dock and spent a restful night. There is not much in Kake and the fuel closed around 6pm. We enjoyed our prawns aboard the Omega and then a restful night of sleep after a very busy day.

In the morning, we decided to head out of Kake heading toward Petersburg. Boy was that a mistake. By the way, who may that decision???? **smile**
