Day 65 July 25, 2008
When we left Kake, it was raining but the seas were calm. During the day, we saw 20-32 mile per hour winds but luckily it was on our nose, so we had very little wave action. The ride was smooth and slightly choppy and I was even shocked to see the wind gauge at 32!! John said the wind was blowing off the land so there was very little fetch. We held closer to the island than usual and it made for a smooth ride. Every once in a while the seas would get choppy but nothing we hadn’t been through before. However, we were lucky because we knew it could have been worse and we were all glad to get into Portage Bay on Kupreano Island for the night.
Portage Bay is an unusual bay, in that it has a large flat fairly shallow bott
om, with lots of swinging room for many boats and lots of crab pot buoy’s. The bottom is mud and has good holding. It is also open all around for the wind to blow but no fetch. The wind blew for the rest of the day around 12-16 kn
ots but there was just a gentle rocking of the Omega and Saoirse. Around 10pm, the winds died down and we had another very restful much need night of sleep.
