Petersburg Alaska

July 18  After leaving Ketchikan the weather just continued to be beautiful and we felt like going a little further.  The sky was blue and seas were calm.  Wind continued to be on our bow, but conditions were great.  We ended up going 65 miles to a beautiful anchorage called Frosty Bay off Seward Passage.  There was a light breeze coming up the valley which made the 85 degrees in the cabin feel much better sitting in the cockpit.  Huge horse flies but they settled down also.  We both dosed off in the cockpit after a long day.  We enjoyed a beautiful sunset & gorgeous moon coming over the mountains. 

We woke in the morning to much cloudier skies with the threat of rain for the next week.  After skillfully avoiding all the gill netters we arrived in Wrangell Alaska.  What an interesting transit avoiding all the nets and how the fisherman let you know there are nets with buoys and running their boats slowly around their nets so you can see a path.  They were everywhere, 

We took a nice walk in Wrangell, took showers and relaxed for the night after studying the charts for our transit thru Wrangell Narrows.  There are 21 miles of narrows with over 60 red and green makers marking the correct pass thru the narrows.  Always leaving the red marker on your right when heading North in this instance.    Meeting and traveling with every kind of boat you can imagine, even a smaller cruise liner. 

We arrived in Petersburg  July 20, where we will hold up for a few days and let the front pass us over this weekend.  Not what we wanted but after searching the charts, there was not a safe protected anchorage for Friday or Saturday for SE winds.  Thursday, today, would have been a good crossing but with 25-30 knots of wind Friday & Saturday it is nicer to be tied to a dock.   More Daleen’s decision than Captain but he also agreed it would be easier to sit for 2 days in heavy rain and wind at a dock than at anchor.  Time to clean, re-organize & preform regular maintenance on Omega.
